Olympic Airspace Chart

by

Running on from Colins talk of the Olympic airspace, i thought i’d get the link up for everybody to look at.

Although airpsace should be abided by at all times, these zones will have much much stronger enforcements than normal. The restricted zone as far as we’re concerned flying from Waldershare is the equivalent of staying out of the LTMA3500, and then there is the Manston controlled zone a few miles north of the club running due west to east a few miles out to sea and then into the restricted zone.

As an extra enforcement measure to help instructors during this period, i think that all x-country flights should be recorded using a gps logger, and downloaded at the end of the day by an instructor to ensure no airpsace is breached. This will perhaps stop anybody thinking along the lines of, “if it can’t be proven i wasnt there”. Food for thought Colin.

Anyway, below is the link to the website:

*A chart of the temporary CAS (T) to be put in place from 16 July 2012 to 16 August 2012. This is not to be used operationally – an official chart wil be issued in 2012*

Many thanks for this post Mat (I assume). You are indeed thinking along the same lines as me in terms of avoiding the restricted area. One thought though, examining the Logger after the flight wont prevent the violation, perhaps nothing will other than the extreme measure of not leaving the circuit. Compulsory moving map with the air space on it, checked by the IC before launch ?

Yes sorry Colin i was having trouble with the pic and forgot to finish the post properly. I agree with you that it is too late once the infringment has occured, but i think after the relevant briefings that will take place, it may be a way of ‘scaring’ x-country pilots from risking going too close just for that 1 looking nice cloud that may try and lure you in. Im sure there is a way of uploaing the manston temporary airspace onto a moving map, but i don’t know how, im just going to not go north of the club under any circumstances, may be worth making that a general rule of thumb?

Mat, Re’ north of WDp… I feel you are correct on that. Bob made the observation last week that on good days there good be quite a few gliders in the WDP area during the qlympics. Another concern ?

    Colin.

i dont think that is a huge concern, but i think it will be worth while letting people know that CLK gliders will be coming south as they quite literally will have nowhere else to go. perhaps lessons on joining a thermal correctly and keeping a good lookout, perhaps enforce lookout in a thermal by covering up the asi/vario and getting said pupil to thermal without needing to look at there instruments.
its sad to have to suggest these things but i think some pilots from WDP, and probally any club, arent use to flying with more than 2 or 3 gliders in a thermal, and like you said, this could be double or tripple that on the right day.

    Matt
